Dog fight in the Bronx

The fight over a tiny purebred Yorkie is brewing in the Bronx. One family, which lost the dog, says another family wrongfully changed her micro-chip registration, and refuses to return her home. Kylea Lester says it should be an open and shut case: a family dog lost in June, and then found by a total stranger in a Laundromat, all on video. "That's my dog," Lester said. But a street encounter with that stranger a few weeks ago led to a confrontation, which then led to harassment, petty larceny, and other charges being filed against Kylea. The Lesters have Ivy's original AKC papers, vet bills, and a matching serial number to a microchip implanted in the dog's neck. But records show a woman identified as Deneen Williams now has her name on Ivy's chip registration. The Bronx DA's office, which is moving forward with its criminal case against Kylea, says its investigation is ongoing. Source: wcbstv.com

What happens to a pig after it has been slaughtered? Of course, part of the animal is meant for consumption, but what happens to the rest? Over three years, designer Christien Meindertma has investigated exactly what products are made from pigs. Her quest provided her with 187 products and led her to a tattoo artist, dentist, farmer and weapon specialist. Beer, medicine, munitions, cardiac valves, brake discs and bubblegum: these are but a few products that contain parts, or sometimes minuscule particles, of a pig. For the very first time an almost surgical dissection of one specific pig is exhibited: PIG 05049 is on display in the Kunsthal, Rotterdam, together with all the products that originate from it. The presentation can be considered as the preamble to KunsthalKOOKT, Festival of Real Taste, to be held from 26 up to 28 September. (via Scribal Terror)

Matilda, the Algonquin cat

In the late 1930s a rather disheveled feline wandered into the Algonquin Hotel in New York, searching for food and shelter. Ever the quintessential host, owner Frank Case welcomed the furry traveler into the Algonquin, actor John Barrymore dubbed the bedraggled stray Hamlet, and a tradition was born. Matilda, the Algonquin's resident cat, just turned 13. A pedigreed ragdoll breed with long, silky, cream-colored hair, she is the hotel's ninth cat since the tradition started. She has the run of the house (except in dining areas and kitchen) but prefers to oversee the comings and goings of the many guests who cross her threshold. Each year Matilda is given a birthday party, as befits a New York celebrity. A memorable one occurred in 2002 when, while celebrating her seventh birthday with 150 of her closest friends, she jumped on her cake and ran out of the room, leaving a trail of paw prints. The temple of tame tigers

The Wat Pa Luangta Bua Yannasampanno Monastery in Thailand is home to a family of tigers raised by a monk and living alongside human visitors. Villagers brought the first tiger cub to the monastery in 1999 after poachers killed its mother.
