Have you ever seen a kakapo?
Once common throughout the three main islands of New Zealand, there are now approximately 62 kakapo left.
The kakapo is one of the rarest parrots in the world. It’s flightless, it’s the world’s heaviest parrot, it's possibly the oldest living bird and it has a subsonic mating boom that can travel several kilometers. It looks like an owl, hops like a sparrow, growls like a dog and has a very unique smell.

Illegal in California
California and Hawaii are the only 2 US states that ban residents from keeping ferrets as pets. California ferret owners are ramping up their campaign to persuade lawmakers, wildlife regulators and the public that it's time to overturn a ban that's been in place for nearly 80 years.
"There is no reason the ownership of the domesticated ferret should be illegal in California," said Pat Wright, who heads the Legalize Ferrets campaign, told the California Fish and Game Commission in February. "These guys are part of our family. The pet-human bond is a strong one, and you're stepping on it."
State wildlife regulators say escaped or discarded ferrets could establish feral populations and threaten native wildlife, such as nesting birds, rabbits and squirrels.
Despite the ban, California is believed to have more ferrets than any other state. The pet industry estimates that about a quarter of the nation's ferret care supplies are sold in California, where ferret owners can have their pets confiscated and be prosecuted for a criminal misdemeanor.

Bird is mom again, at 60
The oldest known wild bird in the U.S. is a new mother.
Wisdom, a Laysan albatross, is at least 60 years old. As part of the North American Bird Banding Program, a U.S. Geological Survey scientist first banded Wisdom as she incubated an egg in 1956. She was estimated to be at least 5 years old at the time. The albatross has since worn out five bird bands.

The cutest bats in the world
The tiny White Bats of Honduras are among the cutest rodents on Earth.
The Honduran white bat is the smallest fruit-eating bat in the New World, and is found from eastern Honduras to western Panama. This species commonly roosts in tents made by biting along the large, central midrib of Heliconia or banana plant leaves. The wing membrane between the second and third fingers is translucent, so that the bats can fold their wings over their body and still watch for predators.
The natural tent protects the White Bats from rain and predators and they only take flight when their home is no longer safe.
The small bats live in colonies of up to six individuals, one male and his harem of females.

Cat Lipstick
at Urban Outfitters for $25.00
"Each delectably creamy lipstick contains PAUL & JOE's "SECRET D'OR," a blend of several varieties of champagne gold frost, each possessing a different overtone and a sparkle that varies subtly depending on the angle from which you view it. Together, these proprietary ingredients provide a gorgeous color with a sheer, highly translucent sparkle! And, as it deserves a second mention, there's a kitten carved into the tip of each lipstick!"I don't get it ... My three cats wouldn't wear this, but they're all boys. Would a girl cat wear this?

Can you say, "Lucky Dog"?
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has a new acquisition: a cuddly puppy.
The fluffy white pup, who answers to "Beast," just moved into the Palo Alto home that Zuckerberg shares with girlfriend Priscilla Chan, according to the dog's new Facebook page.
Beast is a Puli, a Hungarian sheepdog, famous for their dreadlocks when full grown. He was born on January 10 in Oregon.
(One of my favorites, too!)

Cat savior or cat hoarder?
Craig Grant bought 30 acres in Lee, Fla. where he has taken in hundreds of cats at a place called Caboodle Ranch. He's created a cat village with a town hall, church, cafe and even a Walmart. But he is also plagued by accusations of hoarding and mistreatment of the animals. "They make me love me life," he says. "I never feel alone."
Grant is 62. All his life, until about a decade ago, he disliked cats. Today he lives outside a tiny town called Lee, population 355, with hundreds of them.
Here on 30 acres, Grant will take your cat for life. Even if it has leukemia. Even if it's feral. Even if it's old. He promises he won't kill it, he won't even adopt it out, he'll just love it.
Grant believes his place in the world is to provide cat-topia. He talks about one day having 1,000 cats, maybe even 3,000 cats.
Critics, among them a Tampa woman, Carolyn Camp Logan, who had volunteered there, became disgusted and started a website "in memory of the lost Caboodle cats." Coyotes were snacking on the cats, she wrote. Lots of house cats, unaccustomed to the diseases circulating at Caboodle Ranch, got sick or disappeared.
"The man's an ignorant hillbilly," she said. "He's out there trying but he doesn't know what he's doing. He's a hoarder. He thinks no one can do it better than he can."
Gary Conley said his visit to Caboodle Ranch "changed his life."
"Since I've come back, I've not been able to go to sleep at night," he said, "because I know what's happening up there in the darkness."

Mazda develops case of arachnophobia
An itsy bitsy spider may be crawling up your vehicle's evaporative canister and putting your life at risk.
According to Jeremy Barnes, director of communication and national events for Mazda, the car maker discovered small spiders had entered the evaporate canister vent lines of some of its 4-cylinder Mazda 6 vehicles and spun webs, subjecting the vehicles to possible fuel leaks.
"We've found blockage in this line that appears to be related to a particular type of spider," Barnes said.
The culprit is the yellow sac spider, a small arachnid with a body about three-eighths of an inch long with legs that measure about three-fourths of an inch.
Mazda has recalled 65,916 vehicles. Mazda will soon contact every 4-cylinder Mazda 6 owner in North America.

Euuwww! Dog eats owner's toes
A diabetic Oregon man with no feeling in his feet woke up to find his dog had eaten part of his right foot, including three toes. The Roseburg News-Review reports that the 61-year-old man, whose name was not disclosed by police, was in serious condition after calling 911 at about 3 a.m. on Tuesday. The man told emergency responders that he fell asleep on his couch and woke up to find pieces of his foot missing. Roseburg veterinarian Alan Ross says that the dog may have been trying to rid his owner of dead tissue, and says he may have been attracted to the foot if it were infected or gangrenous. Source
Mascot owl killed on soccer field
Soccer team's mascot owl lands on field. Owl hit by kicked ball. Opposing team member kicks owl. Owl dies. Kicker says, “I was not trying to hurt the owl. I did it to see if it would fly.” Of course, no one believed that, so Colombia's soccer officials announced they will suspend Luis Moreno for two games and fine him $560. Source
Stray dog jumps in family's fridge
A runaway dog darted into an Arizona family's apartment and found a cool place to hide - the bottom shelf of the refrigerator.
A Yuma Fire Department spokesman says the family told firefighters the pooch rushed into their home when they opened the front door and kept snapping at them.
When they went to the fridge to get some food to try to lure the dog outside, the animal jumped in the appliance and refused to come out.
Firefighters found the small black terrier-type dog crouched on the bottom shelf, snapping at anyone who approached.

Pizzeria Owner Leaves Mice At Rival Shops
UPPER DARBY, Pa. -- A pizzeria owner with mice problems he blamed on competitors tried to sabotage two rival shops by dumping mice in them.
Upper Darby police said a man walked into Verona Pizza on Monday afternoon and asked to use the bathroom. After he left, the owner said he found footprints on the toilet and noticed that the drop ceiling had been disturbed, and he found a bag tucked up above.
The owner turned the bag over to two police officers who happened to be eating lunch there, and they found three white mice inside, police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said.
Police say the man then walked across the street to Uncle Nick's Pizza and dumped another bag into a trash can inside the establishment, and police found five live mice and one dead one inside.

Xolo - Ugly or not - in vogue again?
The Aztecs ate them. Frida Kahlo enshrined them in her art. So did Diego Rivera, who in a celebrated mural in Mexico City painted one baring its teeth at the invading Spaniards as they landed at Veracruz.
Even the most ardent admirers of the Xoloitzcuintli (SHOW-low-eats-QUEENT-lee) concede that the dog is plug-ugly. One description of this hairless canine of ancient lineage, a national treasure in its native Mexico, characterizes the Xolo as a hot water bottle with pig eyes, bat ears and a rat tail.
With an estimated population of fewer than 1,000 dogs in the United States, the Xolo is barely a statistical blip relative to the overall canine population (46.5 million households own purebred dogs, according to figures compiled last year by the American Pet Products Association.)
The Xolo enjoyed a brief moment of vogue in 1940, when Chinito Jr., a dog bred and owned by a New Yorker named Valetska Radtke, became the first and only A.K.C. champion since the dog made its debut in the club’s stud registry back when Grover Cleveland was president.
The A.K.C. erased the breed from its stud book 50 years ago when interest in this once-popular dog faded and the Xoloitzcuintli, also known as the Mexican hairless, all but disappeared. They've added it back again this year as a recognized A.K.C. breed.

Going to the Dogs
For more than 20 years, candidates running for office in the Hillbrook-Tall Oaks Civic Association in Annandale, WA, have stood, waved and received polite applause at the annual meeting in June. Everyone votes, eats ice cream, chats with neighbors and goes home. This past election, to make the meeting move faster, only the names and qualifications of the candidates were announced. Running for president, Ms. Beatha Lee was described as a relatively new resident, interested in neighborhood activities and the outdoors, and who had experience in Maine overseeing an estate of 26 acres. Though unfamiliar with Lee's name, the crowd of about 50 raised their hands, assuming that the candidate was a civic-minded newcomer. These days, it's hard to get anyone to volunteer to devote the time needed to serve as an officer. The slate that Lee headed was unanimously elected. Everyone ate ice cream, watched a karate demonstration and went home. ad_icon Only weeks later did many discover that their new president was, in fact, a dog. Ms. Beatha Lee is a shaggy, dirty-white wheaten terrier. Source (via The Poodle (and Dog) Blog)
