State and federal wildlife officials rescued an arctic bearded seal Monday afternoon after it was first spotted in a canal near Andrews Avenue. Wildlife officials caught the seal after it was sandwiched between a few kayaks and a motorboat. Rescuers said they were extremely exhausted but relieved after a long day of chasing the dehydrated seal. Officials said the arctic bearded seal was out of its icy habitat and thousands of miles away from its home near the Arctic Ocean.
