Rosamond Gifford Zoo announced the earlier-than-usual arrival of the zoo’s Humboldt Penguin Chicks.

Two chicks were introduced at a press conference including the first chick of the year, which hatched on January 9 to parents Wylie and Mara as well as the most recent hatchling, which arrived on January 17 to parents Frederico and Poquita. Three other chicks also hatched on January 13 to Mario and Montana, January 14 to Jake and Bianca and January 15 to Phil and Carmen. Over a seven year span, a total of 34 chicks have hatched.

Rattlesnake, cobras and an alligator, oh my!

Florida wildlife recently officers found a veritable deadly reptile exhibit inside one man's Boca Raton apartment: A red-spitting cobra, a puff adder, a uracoan rattlesnake, two false cobras and even a small alligator.

When you read the detailed descriptions of each of these reptiles, it's hard to imagine how anyone would willingly live with these deadly creatures. But that was exactly what Tyler Nolan was doing until he was caught keeping them without a permit. Nolan was cited for several health and safety violations. The alligator was released back into the wild while the snakes were turned over to a professional facility capable of caring for them.

Dogs have been a loyal companion to mankind for more than 30,000 years, findings reveal.

Scientists believe that two 33,000-year-old skulls unearthed in digs in Siberia and Belgium show dogs were domesticated long before any other animal, such as sheep, cows or goats.

Turtle gets fiberglass shell

A box turtle who had a tough time crossing the road in Aurora, Colo., has a new lease on life thanks to a local police officer, a clever vet and a new fiberglass shell. By the time an Aurora police officer found "Scorch," the turtle had been hit by a car, and was badly chewed by dogs along the side of the road. The sympathetic officer turned the mangled turtle over to Kevin Fitzgerald, an Aurora veternarian. The vet fashioned a fiberglass shell for Scorch which, he says, will eventually be pushed off after he develops his own new shell. Source

Chinese New Year is one of the oldest Chinese festivals and has many traditions. The Italian feline prowled away with a whopping 10 million euro after his wealthy owner passed away last month.

The current president of the Zoological Society of London,Professor Sir Patrick Bateson, was commissioned by the main bodies that fund medical research in Britain to assess whether the studies on non-human primates (NHPs) were necessary, high-quality and yielded significant advances in medical science. Animal welfare groups opposed to experimentation on monkeys called again for the practice to be banned outright. Bateson's report stated that the practice should continue and finds the current work to be generally of good quality. But also voiced concern that no clear scientific, medical or social benefits had emerged from nearly one in 10 projects. It also said that in a minority of experiments, the justification for using monkeys was "not compelling". Source

Book Review: a dog named Slugger

A Dog Named Slugger by Leigh Brill, is a true story about a woman who, at the height of her Cerebral Palsy symptoms, turned to a service dog organization where she was matched with Slugger, a highly intelligent, devoted and loving Yellow Labrador. The book is heart-warming and inspiring, but it also promotes a very worthy cause--the Service Dog Industry. Leigh’s proceeds from the book will go to the nonprofit St. Francis Service Dogs organization. On a personal note - - I've had a copy of this book for a few months, and had it by my bedside, knowing that I would soon have lots of time to do nothing but reading. I recently had surgery for total knee replacement on my left knee! While what I went through was nowhere close to Leigh's needs and the restrictions which go along with Cerebral Palsy, but living in a four-level house made me very quickly understand how nice a four-legged helper would be. It never failed that whatever I needed was in the wrong part of the house. Opening doors holding onto a walker in front of me, or while holding a cane in one hand and other supplies in the other, really brought home to me what a huge help Slugger's presence must have been to Leigh. I really enjoyed getting to know Leigh by reading her book, and fell in love with the playful, but hardworking Slugger, and his protege Kenda. My only criticism is that there weren't enough pictures! There were 3,721 entries representing 26 breeds. Exhibitors came from every state in the USA and Canada. These pigeons are NOT your average scavengers, you know. Revisit the robin's nest

In 2005, a robin built her nest in the best spot - on top of a rose trellis, under my bedroom window. From May 14, 2005 through June 10, 2005, I took a photo every day and watched as the eggs were laid, protected and cared for and guarded. I took a photo daily as the little hatch-lings emerged and grew. Sadly, I took a photo of the empty nest as they grew up and left the nest. I posted the photos of the robin's nest on a webpage, one which receives several hundred visitors each day. Now that spring might actually be coming (!) I thought we'd take this opportunity to VISIT THE ROBIN'S NEST

Product Review: PetPeePee

I was asked to try out a new product which guarantees that "Urine stains removed will never resurface!" Recommended for tile, grout, wood floors and carpets, to remove dog and cat urine odor. The timing of the request was perfect because our sweet, dear kitty, Bandit, sometimes misses the litterbox and baptizes the carpet instead. I waited until the next "accident" for a good time to try PetPeePee. I was very skeptical when I opened the bottle and took a whiff - and smelled ... nothing! The liquid was clear, too. Hmmmm, I thought - is this just plain water? The directions said to place my nose on an area that smells of urine. Yup - I found the spot right away. Then, I had to saturate the area with the PetPeePee liquid, but without using a spray bottle. It felt a little worrisome, dumping more liquid onto the carpeting, but I did it. I waited the 5 minutes recommended, then started to dab up all the moisture with a clean white rag. I decided to let it dry over night and check it out in the morning. Well? Nice! No smell! The cat urine smell is totally gone! How did they do that? The bottle doesn't list the ingredients. It just says, "Naturally blended Dead Sea minerals." Whatever they are, they work. I will recommend this product to all. NEW ORLEANS— As the one-year anniversary of the Gulf of Mexico oil-spill disaster approaches, the Center for Biological Diversity today released a report tallying the full impacts of the disaster on the region’s birds, sea turtles, dolphins and other wildlife. The report, titled A Deadly Toll: The Gulf Oil Spill and the Unfolding Wildlife Disaster, compiles federal data, scientific papers and media accounts to estimate the number of animals hurt by the spill so far. Using multipliers to calculate the true cost of the damage to wildlife species, the Center estimates that approximately: 6,000 sea turtles, 26,000 dolphins and whales, 82,000 birds, and countless fish and invertebrates may have been harmed by the disaster. Baby orangutan makes first Madrid zoo appearance

The first baby orangutan to be born in captivity in 20 years at the Madrid zoo has made its first public appearance. The 9-month-old primate named Boo cuddled a stuffed animal -- a bright yellow orangutan -- as it was unveiled by a keeper Thursday.
